Have you been interested in merging your home with techy smart appliances? You may have felt that you don't even know where to start. Here are some starter tips on updating your home to a smart one. What used to be a luxury someday is now super affordable. There is no need to hire a professional installer to get set up. You can save yourself a headache and jump into the update by yourself.

My friend Harry summarized his experience for you. Read further below, or watch the video. This brief overview will kick off this journey for you.

Smart light bulbs

You can replace any light bulb with a Smart bulb. Download the application - according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Connect the light bulbs with the application. There is no need to install anything else, simple. Control the bulbs conveniently via phone.

You can choose different mood lighting - dim the light as needed, or even change its color. You can adjust the settings for different times of day - what mood you want in the morning or evening. You can turn on the light yourself, or you can choose to turn it on automatically as per the time set.

An excellent tip is to set the light to turn on automatically instead of an alarm clock. You can even set the gradual lighting of the lamp. After all, it is more pleasant to wake up than a blaring alarm.

Alternatively, we can also look at it from the point of view of security. You're not home, but you'd like people to think so? You set the light automatically or turn it on remotely, voilá.

Harry's favorite brand is Phillips Hue. The Phillips Hub application on the phone controls the devices.

Smart plugs

You can plug a Smart socket into any socket and then any appliance directly into it. Plug in and control, e.g., lamps, heaters, or any other device you can think of. Download the corresponding app according to the brand to your phone. Turn the on and off the device remotely or set it automatically on/off according to the time. Automate your home instantly.

Harry's favorite brand is TP Link. (Tapo P100 and Tapo P115)

Smart cameras

Keeping an eye on your home has never been so easy and affordable. Pick smart cameras for indoors. There are many brands on offer, many of which are pretty cheap.

Download the app and connect to the camera. It is up and running very fast. You can use it to monitor your pets, sleeping babies, or anything else you want to keep under control through your phone's display wherever you are.

Harry's favorite brand is TP-link. They have good quality night vision. The device is controlled via the TP-link application on the phone. Store the videos onto an internal SD card or the TP-link cloud service.

Outdoor camera: Tapo C320WS (pevné umiestnenie, pripojenie cez ethernet or wifi)

Interiérová , Indoor camera: TC70 (360 moveable via app, wifi only)

Smart doorbells with a camera

If you pick the ones running on batteries, they are super easy to install, with no need for drilling or wiring. They also replace a security camera. Connect with the app, and it instantly begins capturing video. The doorbell will send you a notification/video. You will get an overview of what is happening in front of your door, watching on your phone screen. A motion detector is, of course, part of the camera's abilities. Watch, listen, and chat with visitors in real time from anywhere on your phone.

Harry's favorite brand is Google Nest

  • Connected to a power supply rather than batteries
  • Good wifi connectivity
  • Fast notification and response time via the app

A fascinating element (at least for me) is the possibility of voice control. For example, Google Hub or Amazon Alexa (or other hubs) can cover control of all your smart devices in one place. It is okay to mix and match different brands as well.

Of course, there are many more smart home devices. Maybe you already have favorites that you can't let go of. Suppose you would like to dive deeper into other options. In that case, a good start is studying Google Hub or Alexa - what devices they cover.

Which of the above will be your first choice?
